In the Circus

It’s Monday at Alpha II! Today’s theme was step right up, and let me tell you this entire camp is stepping right up! I am so impressed with the spirit of the camp this year.

The topic I really want to address this evening has to do with an amazing signature that was delivered at Council Circle tonight. Matt Demarco was our Big Chief this evening and I was very impressed that he had a good signature that actually dealt with the circus. I will try to tell it to you simply.

Matt’s grandfather was an usher at the Civic Center in Charleston, which for those of you that don’t know, is a giant community center that has shows every night. In April every year the circus comes to the center. Matt said that he had watched the circus many times, but he was only once in the circus. Yes, I said he was in the circus.

His grandfather, being an usher was able to get his grandson in to meet many of the people who were performing at the center. He came up to his grandson one day when he had come to see the circus and told him to come with him. Matt was going to be in the circus parade. Matt was 12 at the time and he was afraid he was too old and that he would be made fun of because he was older than the other seven and eight year olds beside him.

The moral of the story is that when he actually got out in the spotlight and was the center of attention in the center ring, he no longer cared if he looked stupid. He was just a lucky kid that was in the circus and was part of the parade! So the basic tagline was, “You may see the circus many times, but you’re only in the circus once.”

He related this to how this one week at camp that we have we can be in the circus. Camp is what you make of it. You can sit back and watch the circus, or you can make it happen. I plan to make it happen and I hope everyone else does as well!!

Love Always,
Caroline
