Today's families

Meredith | June 22nd, 2007

OMC?s speaker today was Emily Haas, who works for a program called ?Community in the Schools? in Greenbrier County. Today she spoke about her relationship with her wonderful husband and family life. She expressed to us how important commitment and responsibility is in relationships. I felt what she talked about was something very important for teenagers to hear since now-a-days relationships are sometimes based on the wrong ideals. I also think that she showed how 4-H can bring so many good friendships and relationships to you. So many people that I know, including my parents, met through 4-H. Also the fact that 4-H teaches you so many good morals and skills valuable for relationships that that will make them strong and lasting.

There were many different topics brought up in the discussion after meeting with our small groups. One of which was ?the traditional family? and how that?s changing in our society today. Also, the good and bad sides of foster care, which was a pretty debatable subject. We also talked about the influence on children where both parents work, and also single parent families. Lots of campers had very strong opinions on all these subjects but I would say that overall most people believe that as long as parents take responsibility in raising their children, that they will be successful.
