The Three A's: A Perfect Description

Caroline | June 22nd, 2007 at 1:25 am

Caroline just got done bustin’ a move on the dance floor at the best camp party I’ve ever been to. But, before we get to that….

Today was the informal banquet at OMC. This banquet is set up so that each camper wears the best thing they brought to camp with them. Some campers dress up in real fancy dresses and tuxes, others simply wear polos and jeans. For the ones of us who dressed up we, especially the girls had to get all primped before the big event. There was one problem to this agenda, NO WATER!! Thats right, there was a main water line break between here and Weston that caused us to have no running water at all. Lets just say getting ready using bottled water isn’t the easiest thing in the world to do.

Once at the banquet we all stood in front of the Mount Vernon Dining Hall and snapped pictures of ourselves with all of our friends in our beautiful clothes. Then we went inside to begin the festivities. At this banquet last years scholarship winners speak to the rest of the camp about how much they appreciated getting this award and really just what 4-H has meant to them. There were four speeches and one of them stands out in my mind. Thad Garrett won the Guy Stewart Charisma scholarship last year. He spoke tonight about the three A’s that best describe 4-Hers.
The first A stands for “Awareness”. He explained that even if you don’t really care whats happening around you, you will know how to learn enough to get by. The reason for this is because we sit listening to keynote speakers each day and then discuss everything they told us about some relative topic to what’s going on in our world today.
The Second A represents “Adaptability”. This is a great example of what I wrote last night about us adapting as a whole camp this week to the situations that have occured. We know how to help people to get through things by using the resources provided.
The last A stands for “Ambition”. Thad’s main point on this was that as 4-Hers we learn how to jump into anything without even a second thought. If you’re never faced with a situation like this you may not be comfortable enough with yourself to step out of the box until you twenty-three or twenty-four years old. In 4-H we have fourteen year olds that are comfortable enough to exchange their ideas and take what others say about them as adults. Their not afraid to express who they are in their own special way.
This speech really said a lot of t hings I’ve been trying to say to non – 4-hers for years. I personally loved it and will always remember the three A’s. How-How!!
As I said before the party rocked and even though we thought there was going to be no DJ, we got a replacement and probably had more fun than we would have with the other guy.

Much Love,
Caroline

Ben Sweeny gave the speech about the three A’s. My speech was very similar, but my traits were selflessness, resilience, and charisma.
