The Final Council Circle
Tad Light here, and I’m regret to inform the rest of the world that today was the last full camping day here at OMC 2007.
Everything happened today just like a normal day, until COUNCIL CIRCLE. Man oh man…......it was the bomb. I know that a lot of people wouldn’t really understand what the final council circle program is like at OMC, so I’ll breifly run down the events…..
We do the normal stuff: every tribe has a song and yell, and some other stuff like a funny stunt, challenge or what have you.
Then comes the cool part…..
-We have a presentation from the 21 year-olds
-The Chiefs of the tribes do a small presentation
-The awards, scholarships for next year’s camp, are presented
-And finally, the award winners light candles from the central fire then pass the flame around the entire council circle via the candles that everyone in camp has been given.
So now that you know what goes on….. let me tell ya what my experience was like….
I was cramped on the front row of council circle with all the 21 year-olds. It was pretty uncomfortable, but I managed to survive. Anyway, my tribe happened to have to do a talent and a funny stunt. I performed the talent by rapping “U Can’t Touch This”, and also played a major role in the funny stunt as well. It was awesome. There’s nothing like being up in front of nearly 400 people and them all accepting you and what you’re doing and laughing and responding positively the whole time.
After all of that was over, the awards were presented. One of my really good friends won the return scholarship for outstanding first-year camper. Her name is Erika, and I’ve known her since she was way little. I have to say, I was very proud of her and the way that she’s stepped up this week to become a major part of the camping experience for a lot of people. So proud.
After the award winners distribute the fire, we all exit council circle and walk around a candle-lit path throughout the camp which has people parked at stations who are doing inspirational reading and/or songs. It’s really a beautiful sight and experience to take part in, and it’s one that I wish more people had a chance to enjoy.
So we walked the path, then came back around to the pool area, where we had a closing with candle all surrounding the pool. It was incredible.
From there, we went back to the assembly hall for a short dance and time to hang out.
And so ended the last full day here at OMC 2007.
sigh
I’m about to pass out. Good lord I tired.
