........It was a good day

Melville | June 20th, 2007 at 11:43 pm

It’s Wednesday. It is by far the best day I’ve had this week. After the small rough spot of yesterday evening, today is exactly what the camp and myself needed.

With today being as bomb as it was, it has really got me thinking about exactly why I keep coming back to this place. I love singing these songs, but its not the songs. I enjoy all of my workshops, but the workshops aren’t what does it for me. Every summer, I make my trip up I-79 because of these people.

4-H has definitely given me the opportunity to meet some of the greatest people I know and definitely some of the most unique. For years, I have been coming to the Mill and meeting up with my friends I see every year, for a couple weeks in the summer and then maybe a Teen Leader Weekend or two during the rest of the year. We kept in touch, talked often and became quite close through all of this.

This was all until I started my first year of college. These people that I occasionally got to actually hang out with, soon became my every day friends. The people that I would eat with at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The people who saw me in ups and downs, depended on me during their ups and downs, and shared some of my best memories even outside of the 4-H world.

It may be wrong to feel that you are better than other people, but often I cant help but believe that the breed of people that are in 4H are just of a much better quality than others. And its not that these people are born of a higher standard, but its this organization. 4H molds young minds in to some of the most upright, caring, and all around greatest people I have ever met.

I’m about ready for bed, so I’ll leave you with the words of my West Coast boy Ice Cube, “Today I didnt even have to use my AK(not really relevant)...It was a good day.”

Excellent blog Mister Mel, I’m so sorry I missed it this year. I shall most certainly be there next year though. And you’re right, 4H has let me meet some of the greatest people in the world and I don’t know what I’d do without it
