Green Team Weekend
This past weekend I was a guest councilor and pulling on the good ol’ VCA (or ECI) cap again for Living Resources Weekend, a Wyoming County 4-H Recycling camp that was supported by REAP and the Solid Waste Authority.
My good friend and the Kanawha County 4-H extension agent, David Hartley, taught all the participants and adults how to use GPS and we had a big scavenger hunt using the Global Positioning Devices. The Scavenger hunt sprawled across a play ground, walking trail, volley ball court, golf driving range, and a little in the woods. Each site represented a different recyclable, so that was a fun way to apply some of our new knowledge.
A Wyoming County Litter officer, state police men, and other county officials came to be councilors and to teach classes about the 3 Rs. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. We made a commercial that will be on national TV and had a camp party that included board games, guitar hero, dance dance revolution, and baseball Wii. It was… how you say, “off the chain.”
I met a lot of really cool kids and had a blast around the campfire listening to ghost stories from the famous “Bugs” Stover and leading the most games and songs you could possibly fit into a weekend 4-H camp. Staying in a cabin out in the woods after hearing about the Polk-Gap monster was a little intimidating, but little (yet brave) camper Hope and teen leader extraordinaire, Ashley, kept me safe!
The 4-H Green Team in Wyoming County West Virginia shared a great weekend at Twin Falls State Park with me, and I appreciate their hospitality! A big thanks to 4-H extension agent, Suzie England-Lord, for the invite!

I know David has taught classes on GPS use at lots of different events. How do you come up with enough GPS units for the groups to use? My club is working on the Recycling project this year, and the scavenger hunt mentioned about would be a fun activity.
Thanks.
Angie, I’ll let David know you’d like to ask him about this.
Good going. Anything to make us all “more green” is something needed.
